I've heard some version of this hundreds of times. “I'd love to start exercising, but I'm so inflexible.” “My body is too stiff.” “I can barely touch my toes.” “I'll probably get hurt.”
For a lot of people, years of sitting at a desk, driving, and working long hours have left them feeling tight, stiff, and uncomfortable in their own bodies. Maybe you've felt it too. You stand up after sitting for a while and your back feels tight. You bend over and your hamstrings feel like concrete. You help a friend move furniture and spend the next three days feeling like you got hit by a truck.
THE STORY YOU'RE TELLING YOURSELF
So you start telling yourself a story: “I'm too stiff to exercise.” But here's the problem. The thing you believe is protecting you is actually holding you back. If you're stiff from years of inactivity, the worst thing you can do is continue being inactive.
If your body feels tight because it doesn't move enough, why would moving less be the solution? It's like saying “I'm thirsty, so I should avoid water.” The answer isn't to avoid movement. The answer is to find the right movement.
MOST PROGRAMS AREN'T BUILT FOR REAL PEOPLE
Unfortunately, a lot of fitness programs aren't designed for real people. They're designed for the average person. The problem is that nobody is average. Some people have bad knees. Some have tight hips. Some have shoulder issues. Some haven't exercised consistently in 10 years. Yet many programs throw everyone into the exact same workout and hope for the best. That's where people get frustrated, and sometimes hurt.
A good program doesn't ignore your limitations. It works with them. It meets you where you are. It helps improve your mobility, flexibility, strength, and confidence one step at a time.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO EARN THE RIGHT TO START
You don't have to be flexible before you start exercising. You become more flexible because you start exercising. You don't have to get in shape before joining a program. The program helps you get in shape. You don't need to earn the right to start. You just need to start.
The goal isn't to move perfectly. The goal is simply to move.
If you've spent years sitting behind a desk, your body isn't asking for perfection. It's asking for movement. The best thing you can do is begin. The worst thing you can do is convince yourself you're too far gone to try. You're not. You're just one step away from getting started.
